Pic(k) of the Week: Cask Love

Cask Love

Demonstrating his appreciation, Justin Harbin, then bartender at Evening Star Cafe, a restaurant and pub in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia, hugs an oaken cask of Loose Cannon Hop3 IPA, brewed and casked by Heavy Seas Brewing, of Baltimore, Maryland.

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving may be the busiest shopping day of the year, but the evening before Thanksgiving can be one of the busier bar-drinking nights of the year.

In 2007, on Thanksgiving Eve, the Evening Star served its first-ever cask-conditioned ale, Loose Cannon Hop3 Ale. The pub would go on to establish a tradition, for four more years, of tapping the same cask-conditioned ale that same night, through 2010 when this picture was taken.

24 November 2010.

  • The Evening Star was closed for renovations in November of 2011, and thus couldn't continue the Thanksgiving Eve tradition.
  • Pic(k) of the Week: one in a weekly series of personal photos, often posted on Saturdays, and often, but not always, with a good fermentable as a subject.

  • Caveat lector: As a representative for Select Wines, Inc. —a wine and beer wholesaler in northern Virginia— I sell the beers of Heavy Seas.
