Into the Privet woodland

The gentle gloom of a dense thicket, in a 120-acre suburban Piedmont forest, during an end-of-summer's light rain.

  • The privet of the caption refers to the name of a park trail, itself referencing the invasive abundance of Chinese privet therein.
Privet is a flowering plant in the genus Ligustrum. The genus contains about 50 species of erect, deciduous or evergreen shrubs, sometimes forming small or medium-sized trees, native to Europe, north Africa, and Asia. They may be evergreen or deciduous, and are tolerant of different soil types. They often have conspicuous heads of white flowers, followed by black berries. Various species of privet are now an invasive problem in North America, Australia, and New Zealand, because, due to their adaptability, they are able to outcompete and therefore displace native vegetation.
